Reality check 1,2,3

Hi all, Debby Downer here. I totally need to vent, if that's alright? No? Tough shit. Here it goes. I just finished my last day of work at The Knot, and while I know it's for the best that I'm moving on, there is something extremely depressing and stressful about the fact that I have just enough money rolling in to cover two months rent and bills. Somehow things always work out, and I just pray that this time is no different.

A friend at work today asked me what job I would want if I could do anything, and I said blogging. Obviously it would be sweet if FnF somehow took off, but even if it didn't, I think it would be awesome to blog for another magazine's web site. I love writing with a voice and being able to interact with readers. Another job I'd love to do one day is have my own newspaper advice column. "Ask Ellen" has a nice ring to it, no? I could also see myself being really passionate about pimping out my amazingly talented friends and somehow starting my own PR biz—even if they were my only clients. How's that saying go? "Shoot for the moon, and land in the stars." Right...I tend to dream big.

Actually, just vocalizing my dream jobs somehow made me feel a little bit better. (How much will it suck though if none of it comes true!!) Up until just ten minutes ago, I was at an all-time low. OK, well I'm still plopped on the couch watching King of Queens and debating whether or not I want to go back out and brave the cold so I can medicate my blues with a little (or a lot) of ice cream. Shockingly, I don't think I will. The only other thing that has managed to perk up my spirits just a bit is looking at this picture of the these squirrels engaging in oral sex. It's pretty damn hilarious. Umm, is it crazy that I'm a wee bit jealous of the one on the receiving end? Right, I think this is about the time I should wrap things up.

Anyone have encouraging words or favorite inspirational quotes to share? Do my dream jobs seem crazy to you? If you could have any job in the world, what would it be??

  1. I think you're a great writer, hey you even have a reader in France ;)
Your dream jobs don't seem crazy at all!
You have great ideas of topic in this blog and you know how to make people relate to it. And you also take the time to answer to everybody.
    That's why I'm sure you'll realise your dreams ;)

My dream job is hard to explain in french, so in english...! I studied art administration, and i would love to work for a radio, a place where there is concerts or theater etc... I love being that person behind the stage that take care of everything backstage. Well I don't know if that make any sense for you... I'll try to find the right words to explain it ;)

Anyway, I understand that you can be a bit worried today but i'm sure you'll have a great career ;)

  2. Haha!be carefull, that one squirrel looks like a biter! Thinking about aspirations is a tough one. Even when my career is going the right way, I'm never satisfied. I'm doing good at work, but I still feel like I'm in a little bit of a rut. If you become complacent with your position that is probably where you will stay. If you want more you at least have a chance of attaining it. You can do it! My goal was always to retire at 40. Its pretty clear that will not happen, but I'm going to keep trying.

  3. Thanks for the encouragement, Aurore, that really means A LOT!!! And yes, a reader in France is a double-bonus :) Yes, your career goal totally makes sense. Have you done any work in this area? Are internships big in France?? Every bit or work experience helps—I'm sure you'll get there!!

LOL, George! A bite just might do me good. Riiight. So yeah, I agree, I'd rather keep striving for SOMETHING instead of being complacent. Which is why I quit a secure job for a risky one. Every day felt like freakin Groundhog's Day. Have you seen that movie? It was miserable.

  4. Elle, you are way ahead of most -- actually knowing what you want to be when you grow up and being brave enough to admit it and do somehthing about it! I'm still trying to figure it out on a daily basis. :-)

I could see you doing any and all of those careers and doing an amazing job!

From the words of my dear old Dad (I'm sure he "borrowed" them from someone), "find something you love and you'll never work a day in your life." He usually follows that with "Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff." And from the words of my yoga instructor, "Leap and the net will appear." How can you not love Zen sayings. It sounds better after an hour and half of sweating in 100 degree room. :-)

    Miss you!

  5. Thanks, Al! I actually think it was you who put the bug in my ear about being a newspaper columnist one day years ago. I totally agree with your dad's saying...I LOVE working when I'm doing something I'm passionate about. You're so amazing, I'm sure you'll figure out what you want to be "when you grow up" haha soon! (We're still just kids, right?!)

  6. i agree with alison-it is impressive and amazing that you have are creating your own path and really going for what you want. most of us are still figuring it out! this is one of my favorite quotes by tennessee williams:

"there is a time for departure, even when there is no certain place to go"

and when i was looking that up to make sure i got the words right, i read this one:

"enthusiasm is the most important thing in life"

and it made me think of you, because you are always enthusiastic, even when you are struggling, you are excited about where you are going and what you are doing, and that is something i really respect about you!

as far as my dream job, it would be travel photographer. or like someone that writes reviews of all the best spas in the world. i could get used to that. :)
