Valentine's Day Gone Wrong

So last week I told you how relaxed I was about the "love holiday," but the story I'm going to tell you about my first Valentine's Day with my boyfriend, will probably make you think just the opposite. I'd be lying if I said that I had zero expectations on that day. I don't know what exactly I was anticipating, but I just wanted it to feel special

On the big day, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers at work, in a really cool glass vase that I still have in my apartment. Getting flowers at work is funny—it makes you feel really great, but it's also very embarrassing 'cause you feel like you're showing off. At least I did. Has anyone ever felt this way? Don't get me wrong, I liked it. A lot.

So after work I gave my boyfriend his present. Just a bag full of baked goods, boxer shorts and a card with a message inside that took quite a bit of time to write. Ok, so that's a cheesy present, but was it thoughtful? Yes. My bf really liked it, and I could tell he felt a little bad that he didn't have anything to give me. (Yes, the flowers do count as a present, but you know what I mean.)

I was a little, ok a lot, disappointed that I didn't get a card. I'm such a huge card person. I'd rather have a meaningful card over flowers any day. It's a nice way to tell someone how you feel—to share things you never have before, or to say the things you don't say often enough. Anywho, moving forward.

We went to dinner at this really nice Japanese restaurant, Matsuri, that I had been to once before. (The time I went, I saw Nicole Kidman and Molly Shannon. It was sweet.) Dinner was yummy, but there was just something off about the night. My heart wasn't really in it anymore, and I didn't think his was either. I guess I just felt that his actions were derived from something he read in a Valentine's Day for Dummies book—I felt as if he was just going through the motions.

I don't know why, but the day after I was still feeling a little upset about it, and as much as I tried to refrain from bringing it up, I just couldn't. I told him how I felt, he understand (kinda...I think), and I've recently a card, if not two on every Valentine's Day since!

So by now you are probably thinking I'm a total brat. I'm not, I swear! Last year we celebrated by seeing a double feature at the movies—Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler—and then went to the sushi restaurant where we had our first date for dinner. I was beyond thrilled with the day. See, that's all I need—movies, popcorn, sushi, wine...and a card.

Has anyone else ever been let down on V-Day? Do you have your plans locked down for the 14th yet?! My bf and I are actually celebrating on Saturday, which I think will entail more movies, relaxing, ordering in and possibly some cooking, too. Oh, and drinking. Sunday I'm going to a friend's baby shower, and then a Fashion Week party at night. Should be fun—I'll keep ya posted on my adventures, so check back! MWAH!

  1. Then there was the time I passed out on my BF right before the "deed". LOL..whoopsie!

I wish less stress was placed on couples to use this day as a show of affection. My take has always been, it's better to get flowers or a card on a random day than expect on 1 day?

That being said..YES, I've expected and been dissapointed in the past:( I'm human.

  2. Ahh passing out before the deed, that's the worst! I just still can't agree with the V-Day haters! I want to, I tried...I CAN'T. Yes, getting sweet notes and massages and flowers on a random day is awesome and important, but what is so wrong with having a selected day to show your appreciation? I agree that the guy doesn't need to pull out the red carpet and go NUTS, but I do think it should be a special day for a couple...whatever the definition of that is for them. Even if it's something simple like watching the baby while you send your wife to the nail salon.

  3. I agree, I don't think you need to go crazy on Valentine's day, my husband usually gives me flowers, and we exchange cards. We don't give each other big presents. I remember our first Valentine's day as a couple we were in a huge fight, and on the verge of breaking up. We had been going out for almost a year. I remember crying in my room, and then going out to eat with my parents. Sweet!
I have a feeling this year it won't be so great. Mardi Gras is going on right now and this weekend are all of the big parades. So Valentine's day was already going to get overshadowed. We were supposed to be having a party at our place tomorrow night because some of the parades pass right by our apartment. But my husband is having hernia surgery today! He just found out yesterday. So his Mardi Gras is screwed, he's depressed. So anyway, we will probably just be sitting home and hanging out on Valentine's Day which is fine. I'm a little sad that since he is having surgery we won't be going to the parade Sunday night which Drew Brees (the Saints quarterback) will be in!

  4. Oh man...I was dating this guy freshman year of college and we had the most awkward v-day EVER. Both of us were too shy to suggest actually going out and doing anything, so we hung out in my room and watched a DVD. LAME. Hehe, this year I'm spending v-day with my fam and my cat! Chocolate will be involved :-)

  5. LOL, would you kill me if I mentioned that I hate manicures, too? The awful sound of the emery board -- it's like getting my teeth drilled at the dentist. Mani-free since my wedding five years ago.

On that note though, I think the best gift -- on ANY day -- is having a hubby who's always willing to hang out at home with D if I have something to do. It's amazing how many dads call it "babysitting" and act like it's a huge favor.

  6. Oh, but p.s. guess what day tix for American Idiot on B'way go on sale? So you'll be happy to know that George and I are being forced to buy each other something on V-day...haha.

  7. JKW, sorry to hear about your husband, that stinks! Maybe you could just try to boost his spirits a bit on V-day by renting some of his favorite movies or cooking? OR, you could rock a sexy nurse outfit while you take care of him ;)

Runner's Kitchen, that's so funny. Sounds like something that would happen to me. It probably has actually, but I've omitted it from my memory.

Kara, you are not human. How do you not like manicures? You can tell them not to cut your cuticles, ya know. haha, Billy Joe for V-day? That's an AWESOME present!!

  8. It's not the cuticles! It's the filing. Like torture.

I <3 Billie Joe. I need to go back to 1994 and tell my punk-poser freshman self that I'm going to see Billie Joe's new Broaadway musical.
