So last week I told you how relaxed I was about the "love holiday," but the story I'm going to tell you about my first Valentine's Day with my boyfriend, will probably make you think just the opposite. I'd be lying if I said that I had zero expectations on that day. I don't know what exactly I was anticipating, but I just wanted it to feel special.
On the big day, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers at work, in a really cool glass vase that I still have in my apartment. Getting flowers at work is funny—it makes you feel really great, but it's also very embarrassing 'cause you feel like you're showing off. At least I did. Has anyone ever felt this way? Don't get me wrong, I liked it. A lot.

I was a little, ok a lot, disappointed that I didn't get a card. I'm such a huge card person. I'd rather have a meaningful card over flowers any day. It's a nice way to tell someone how you feel—to share things you never have before, or to say the things you don't say often enough. Anywho, moving forward.
We went to dinner at this really nice Japanese restaurant, Matsuri, that I had been to once before. (The time I went, I saw Nicole Kidman and Molly Shannon. It was sweet.) Dinner was yummy, but there was just something off about the night. My heart wasn't really in it anymore, and I didn't think his was either. I guess I just felt that his actions were derived from something he read in a Valentine's Day for Dummies book—I felt as if he was just going through the motions.
I don't know why, but the day after I was still feeling a little upset about it, and as much as I tried to refrain from bringing it up, I just couldn't. I told him how I felt, he understand (kinda...I think), and I've recently a card, if not two on every Valentine's Day since!
So by now you are probably thinking I'm a total brat. I'm not, I swear! Last year we celebrated by seeing a double feature at the movies—Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler—and then went to the sushi restaurant where we had our first date for dinner. I was beyond thrilled with the day. See, that's all I need—movies, popcorn, sushi, wine...and a card.
Has anyone else ever been let down on V-Day? Do you have your plans locked down for the 14th yet?! My bf and I are actually celebrating on Saturday, which I think will entail more movies, relaxing, ordering in and possibly some cooking, too. Oh, and drinking. Sunday I'm going to a friend's baby shower, and then a Fashion Week party at night. Should be fun—I'll keep ya posted on my adventures, so check back! MWAH!
