My mini makeover

Liza can now add makeup artist to her resume—she has her first job at a shoot this weekend! Makeup is something she's always enjoyed as a hobby, and now she's turning it into a part-time gig. Hello, inspiration!

Normally I jump at the chance to have Liza do my makeup, but getting it done at 10pm, only to wash it off again isn't as much fun. Plus, I was a sweaty beast last night—our apartment gets so hot in the winter! But, Liza wanted to do a trial run before the shoot, so of course I helped my sis out.

She was going for a fresh, simple look and I think she totally achieved it. My lips (per instructions for the shoot) were supposed to be purple-ish black, so obviously she's going to have to rethink that one. It's so weird how lipstick can look one color in the tube, and then something totally different when you apply it!

Like our impromptu photo shoot in the bathroom? Of course I had to do one serious face. Would you have even guessed that I'm wearing fake lashes? They are subtle since we were going for a natural look—no Kim Kardashian spider lashes for me! I thought it would be really hard to apply them, but Liza was a pro. She cut them in three parts, and then applied them separately—apparently it's a lot easier than doing the whole thing in one go.

I never wear foundation, but the oil-free one Liza used, Laura Mercier, felt really light and gave my skin a pretty glow. I also really liked the e.l.f. cosmetics dual under eye concealer and highlighter. It's hard to tame my under eye circles, but this did the trick! Liza used just a touch of the highlighter at the top of my cheekbones for a little extra shimmer. I love e.l.f. products—they work great and are dirt cheap!

I hope Liza will do my makeup when I have somewhere to GO next time. She is the queen bee of the smokey eye—a look I love, but have no idea how to do. Is it terrible that I contemplated (only for about five seconds) leaving it on overnight so I could wear it to the Job Hunt press conference this am?

So tell me: What are your favorite makeup products? And how often do you get your makeup done professionally? If you live in the NYC area, you know who to call next time ;)

  1. Oooh...love the face! Can Liza rec a good tinted moisturizer? I've been using Neutrogena but it's kinda harsh and...I don't know, makeup-y. And totally comedogenic :P

I'm newly obsessed with Korres mascara. It's not gooey or clumpy, and it's mostly natural, so I don't feel so bad about the fact that I never wash it off before bed.

  2. Props to Kara for referring to something as "Comedogenic"

I know jack about makeup. I just recently bought my first eyelash curler, and it has changed my life.

  9. Why thanks, everyone for the compliments! You're making me blush ;) Actually, I was mistaken, Lauren, she didn't use a foundation, just the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, as you said. I never wear anything other than a little powder, so I just assumed what she was applying was foundation...worked just as good I think, and it was really light!

Kara, Liza's fave tinted moisturizers are Laura Mercier or Prescriptives—super lightweight. They aren't cheap, but I suppose if you are going to splurge on one thing, it should be that. (I'm commenting for her bc she STILL doesn't know how! Not to worry, I'm working on getting my comments set up through Facebook soon!) When she comes across other great finds—especially at good prices, I will let everyone know!

Haha, skw, don't know about the "cool" part—you are sweet :) and yes—e.l.f. is so great—I'm pretty sure everything is under $2!

And SCS, it IS amazing what an eyelash curler can do...I just started using one about a year ago. You use it BEFORE you apply your mascara, right? I used to do it after and Liza was like, "What the heck?! Umm, no."

  10. Ellen! You look gorgeous!!! I really like Laura Mercier's under eye concealer and lip gloss and I may need to give the tinted moisturizer a try too -- I've never worn foundation and your skin looks amazing! :)

  11. I am so jealous of all you ladies who go "nude" without foundation. My acne in high school, and the subsequent discoloration, got me in the habit of wearing it. Now I feel nekkid with out it.

I loved the look Liza gave you - or rather, I loved the way Liza emphasized your natural beauty. SCS

  12. Thanks, Lalla and Shannon, you ladies are really laying it on thick and I LOVE IT. haha. Wow, looks like I am the last to know about Laura Mercier! I thought I'd be teaching you guys something, but you already knew. SCS, what kind of foundation do you wear? I might start wearing a little...it really does even out your coloring.

  13. Hmmm. Maybe I'll go test out the Laura Mercier at Sephora and see if it's worth the splurge.

LOL Shannon -- everything claims to be "non-comedogenic" but, um, not for me! It's like picking the lesser of evils -- do I go natural and look blotchy, or do I even out my skin tone but break out from the makeup? Ugh.
