What's your favorite teeny-bopper movie?

I worked at a "tween" magazine for four years (which eek, seems like way too long looking back at it), so not only was I being paid to know who Miley Cyrus was dating this time or what Joe Jonas liked on his pizza, but I actually liked it. I watched High School Musical 1, part of 2 and avoided 3 all together. I slowly got sick of it all, which is why I eventually quit that job, but I'll never get tired of teeny-bopper movies. They are, in their own right, classics.

Last night, before I changed the channel over to watch Gossip Girl, I caught this scene from 13 Going on 30. It is the best. Ever notice how all teeny-bopper flicks have at least these three key elements: 1.) A villian 2.) An underdog 3.) At least one totally unrealistic element. Don't you just love how everyone already knew the moves to Jennifer Garner's "Thriller" dance in this scene? I always thought school dances would be like that in real life, but they weren't. Not even close.

Mean Girls is definitely on top of my list of all-time favorites. I wish that Lindsay Lohan would come back. She was so good in this movie. I always remember being so jealous of her red hair and the fact that she ended up with the hottest guy in school. Um yeah, that never happens either. (At least not to me, damnit!)

Clueless is so genuis. Which girl were you most like in highschool: Tai, Cher or Dionne? I bet you can guess who I was. Tai, of course! I wish I had had a friend like Cher to give me a makeover. Lord knows my eyebrows needed the help. There are rumors about Clueless 2 coming out, but I'll believe that when I see it!

Ok, was anyone else in love with Ethan Embry in Can't Hardly Wait? I was such a sucker for the quirky, shy guys when I was younger. Oh and what about Empire Records? He was in that movie, too. Liza, my cousin, Katie, and I would watch it over and over and over. We were freakin' obsessed. I definitely had an Ethan Embry phase--whatever happened to him?

Just writing this post is making me want to skip work to stay home and watch all four of these movies. I suppose I should be thankful that I actually have a job to go to at the moment. Next week will be a whole different story. Bleh.

Anyway, tell me: What are you favorite teeny-bopper flicks of all time?

  1. OMG! Clueless is epic. I remember writing a paper in 10th grade comparing it to Jane Austen's Emma. I watched that movie with Vinnie Lui like a bajillion times to get it down pat for the paper. It is well-written, well-acted, and just awesome. I had the soundtrack on CD, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were IN the movie.
Sigh...I totally want to watch that movie now.
Let's blow off 7th and 8th, have a calorie fest, and go see the latest Christian Slater.
    K?

  3. I loved Clueless, too. Now, being a "tad" older, I also love Heathers. I'm pretty sure Christian Slater is in that. And Sean Penn is the absolute bomb in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Dazed and Confused reminded me of high school and I thought it was funny, too. I think it was Matthew McCnaughey's 1st movie role, and he is very funny in it. Oh, and Grease, which is classic, and never goes out of style. (IMO)

  4. Ooo! Heathers is deliciously dark. Great movie! Some of the wacky colors make me think of Tim Burton, but then again it is not his genre at all.

    Teenage Suicide...Don't do it.

  5. Ok, so I'm just going to admit it: I have never SEEN Heathers! The last time I told someone that, they looked at me like I had three heads?? Is this a must-see even though I'm almost 29 years-old? Did anyone else love Empire Records?? Just curious. Ohh and how could I have forgotten 10 Things I hate About You!!! I think that was Heath Ledger's first movie?

  6. I think Heathers is a must-see. Like Shannon said, darkly delicious.

Most of the ones like 10 things, High School Musical, Mean Girls, I have not seen.

I haven't heard of Empire Records. Should I check it out?

  9. Clueless is amazing. I have to at least stop and watch part of it every time it comes on t.v. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out. I remember our 7th and 8th grade dance that year all the girls wearing short plaid skirts with the knee high tights and chunky shoes! " You're a virgin who can't drive" "That was way harsh Tai". Love it!

  10. High School Musical is PAINFUL--the eye candy that Zac Efron provides isn't even worth it. But yes, do see Empire Records! Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger are in it, and are both really good. It's a little bit edgier than Mean Girls, etc.

MYA--yeah, I think I saw Ethan Embry in a random movie last year, and now I can't remember what it was...I want to say Eagle Eye?? It was a small part. I also rented a movie he was in called Pizza a few years ago...yeah, not worth it. Some actors are only good as teen starts, unfortunately :(

Amanda, do you have any favorites that aren't on the list?? I feel like there MUST be a million more!

Haha, nice quote, JKW! I like when Cher says, "Christian said he'd call the next day. In boy time that meant Thursday."

  11. Clueless began my unhealthy obsession with Paul Rudd.
