How long would it take you to eat two Pop-Tarts?

Me? 90 seconds, easy. And I don't mean it would take 90 seconds if I was in a Pop-Tart eating contest either. I'm fully aware that scarfing down food isn't conducive to weight loss, but I just can't help it. My mom is a speedy eater too, so maybe it's genetic. (She's also tiny, so I don't think I'm making a valid point here).

Ok, so let me get to my story before you think I'm going to go off on a tangent about Pop-Tarts. (Not that that would be a bad thing). Last week at work, the girl I sit next to got a pack of Pop-Tarts from the vending machine. About ten minutes after she opened them, I noticed she was still eating the Pop-Tarts. I was pretty impressed, but when I noticed she was still slooowly working on those darn Pop-Tarts thirty minutes later, I was blown away. Another ten minutes, and then another ten minutes and another ten minutes went by. I'm pretty sure at one point I was just staring in disbelief with my head cocked to the side. I just couldn't comprehend how a human being could eat something as delicious as a strawberry Pop-Tart at a super-snail's pace. I stopped keeping track after a while, but I'd say it took her about an hour and a half before she was done. Amazing.

The girl is a petite little thing, so I guess her eating style explains that. I need to learn from this, but I don't know if I ever will. Eating slowly seems impossible. Like, guys, I'm pretty sure I could kick Takeru Kobayashi's ass in a hot dog eating contest. Hell, I know I could.

What about you: Is your eating speed more like Pop-Tart girl or Takeru Kobayashi --or somewhere in between?

  1. I love you Ellen. This is totally me. I inhale everything so fast. My mom was a fast eater too. I'll go to a picnic and eat two hotdogs, and two hamburgers so fast that people think I'm eating my first burger. Maybe she ate 10 packs of pop tarts, and you just didn't notice!

  2. Haha, no, it was definitely just one pack. My eyes were glued to her throughout the whole experience, so I'm pretty positive about that!

  3. I have cut down my pop tart cosumption greatly since reading the nutritional label (As I suggest for you since I know you work hard at yoga and live a health conscious lifestyle- real strawberries are way beter :), but when I do crack open that wonderful foil (we all need are little rewards) packaging I enjoy taking off the crusts and only going for the iced part.. Watching slow eaters is part of our animal instinct.. Luckily we have evolved enough that we dont just jump over and take their food like the rest of the animal kingdom.. She is lucky- it could have turned into the hallway scene from Mean Girls..

Challenge: Could you pace yourself to make 2 pop tarts to last 10 minutes? Could be a fun time killer on a Sunday afternoon..

  4. Haha, the hallway scene from Mean Girls is the BEST, Cincy! And yeah, I don't make a habit out of eating Pop-Tarts...can't remember the last time I had one. I think that's why I was a.) Jealous of the girl for eating them b) Amazed that she ate them so slowly.

But I accept your challenge. I just might have to bust open a pack of Pop-Tarts to see how long I can drag it out! :)

  6. Is that really from the Pop-Tarts commercial? For some reason I'm thinking Skittles or something, but I guess that wouldn't make sense...
