Cooking, clean-up: Who does what in your home?

My boyfriend's been on a cooking kick lately, and I've been loving every bite of it. Last week was chili (which we ate for three dinners in a row!), and this week it's anything-shrimp. He scored a free pound of it at Whole Foods, so we're throwing it into anything and everything.

Last night we had this delicious salad. My bf likes his food super-spicy (think Ben Stiller in Along Came Polly), so my mouth was on fire mid-way through, but my stomach was happy. The genuinely content feeling I usually have after a healthy, yummy meal quickly ended when I looked over at the sink. It was overflowing, and I was on dish duty. Fun times.

A load like this easily takes at least 30 minutes to clean. For the first time I realized what a luxury it is to have a dishwasher at my place. Hrm, I think it's time to invest in paper plates, hun! I got a little pouty about the task at hand when my boyfriend remarked, "Well, I don't have time to do it. You do." It's true, I have the time, but that's mainly because I MAKE the time. Just like I usually MAKE the time to go to the gym, even if it means waking up at 5am. But whateves, until I get the full-time job, I will always be the girl who has the time. To do everything. (Note: I worked ten hours yesterday, but I guess it doesn't count because I don't have a "real" job.) First, I was a laundry bitch in this post, and now I'm a dish bitch. My mom was a bean bitch in this post, so I guess it runs in the family.

I know I'm being unfair. A free, home-cooked meal certainly warrants dish duty, but you know how much I love bitching. I'm just so gosh darn good at it!

Tell me: Who does the cooking and clean-up in your home?

  1. I do it all! I pretty much do all of the typical domestic "woman" stuff. I knew that's how our relationship would be, but it does get tough when I also have a job! Can't wait til that housewife lifestyle starts up.... Washing dishes is the WORST. My old apartment didn't have a dishwasher, and the apartment we are in now has one and after almost two years I still get giddy when I start it up.

  3. We used to have a dishwasher, still do in fact! It's just that the thing finally died in a gush of untraceable water leaking a few months ago. Can't be bothered to get it fixed as it always needed salt, tablets, fluid etc and cost a mint to run and so I do the washing up with Amanda. Any excuse for another glass of wine and a replay of Alicia Keys!
Anyone got any suggestions for a cheap ( and I mean cheap and excellent) hotel to stay at should we come to New York in the summer?

  4. Somehow I managed to marry a saint that actually LOVES to do the dishes. God love his mother!

  5. I have never not had a dishwasher until the apartment I am in now and I HATE it! It's miserable standing three and washing. Usually I am too lazy to even dry haha!

Love your bio and your blog, thanks for visiting mine! =)

  7. I have been doing the brunt of the housework for years. Cooking, cleaning, laundry etc. The lady of the house has been picking up the cooking end the past few months since she has gotten more into it. And she probably washes more baby bottles than me. But I'm efficient, so I don't mind doing most of this stuff. If I had to choose between the cooking and plate washing I would choose the cooking-hands down.

  8. We try to switch off so one person isn't doing the same thing each night. But my husband does cook more, so I end up with dishes and they don't bother me too much. BUT we disagree about when they get done!! He would prefer immediately after dinner is finished and I usually wait until a TV break or really whenever I get motivated, but I won't leave them overnight.

Sometimes they bother him so much he does then anyway and ends up cooking and cleaning the dishes! Not my intent, but I won't complain :)
