Do you have workout ADD?

I do sometimes and it SUCKS. I hate when I watch the clock at the gym when I KNOW I should be too busy working up a sweat to even think about what time it is! The other day I went to a spinning and yoga class back to back. (I've been doing double workouts on days I have the time because my schedule has been so sporadic lately.) In both classes I just watched the seconds tick, tick, tick on by. The spinning instructor was partially to blame though. She played the WORST music ever—it was a random techno mix, and I hate techno. Umm hello, teach, is a little Rihanna too much to ask for?! I just couldn't get motivated, so I left class ten minutes early to do some glute work before yoga.
I'm pretty good at concentrating on exercises that concern my ass, so for those 10 minutes, I was focused. But then it was time to get my downward facing dog on, and I was back to being distracted. Just as I'd start thinking about my To-Do list and what I was going to have for dinner, the teacher would say, "Don't let your mind drift. Bring it back to what you are doing in this very moment." Damn, the bitch is a mind reader! Well, she probably caught me glancing at the clock every five minutes. She also told us to "find our inner juiciness" and that "deeper doesn't mean better." Who the hell can concentrate with commentary like THAT?!

So yep, I'm diagnosing myself with workout ADD. Who else gets it? Is there a cure?

  2. I look at the clock in spin but mostly because I'm in PAIN! I always do different things to keep my workouts fresh otherwise I just get bored out of my gourd.

Music is KEY for most workouts!

  5. haha nicky i also LOVE eating and beer drinking. and ellen i also get workout ADD!! which is why i can't really stand going to the gym... but i love running. but like jennymac, i never get bored running outside, so that's my thing. sometimes i listen to music, sometimes not. i'm from minnesota so i can withstand pretty shitty/cold weather... and sometimes in the winter if i'm not too lazy i even cross-country ski. but working out at the gym i get SUPER bored within about 20 minutes--i wish i had even your attention span! :)

  6. Workout ADD is better than not going at all. I have had a hard time making time to even get there over the past few weeks. I really need to retire, is 31 too early?

  7. Barbara, I rarely challenge myself to the point of PAIN in spinning. I push myself when I like the teacher/music, but for some reason I never find it THAT challenging. Although, I did do a spinning at a new studio here, SoulCycle, and that was REALLY hard. I guess it just depends.

I'm an outside runner too, JennyMac!

Nicky, I really don't know! I grew up doing competitive sports and had practice twice a day, and I think that kind of discipline stuck with me. Well, I'm not THAT hardcore anymore, but starting young definitely has helped me keep it up. It's just part of my routine. Sometimes it is hard to stay motivated, but whenever I want to skip a workout, I always remind myself how good I will feel after I'm done. You'll never regret working out ya know? Find something you enjoy doing, even if it's just walking with a friend, and build from there. Once you start seeing changes in your body and fitness levels, you'll want to keep going.

Hi Rachel! I LOVE eating and drinking beer too—let's form a club! :) At least you know what works for you—exercising outside is the BEST!
