On a scale of 1 to 10: How domestic are you?

Ohh I'd say I'm about a four. You guys know this. I'm more inclined to tidy and stuff things under the bed than actually getting down on my hands and knees to scrub/wipe/dust something. And my idea of a yummy home-cooked meal very well might involve something out of a can. (After all, black beans make everything better.) And even though I truly do enjoy baking and entertaining, I rarely do it. Why? Because it's expensive. And my apartment is small. I'm confident I will step up my domestic game to at least a 7 when the time comes for me to be a wifey and a mommy, but for now I'm going to eat cereal and froyo for dinner without a flicker of guilt.

So yeah, you can only imagine my reaction when I got a voice message from Courtenay last night telling me she was heading to her smock making class. Smock making? Yes. Now that is some SERIOUS domestic shit, y'all. Off.the.charts. I have friends who are gardening (you know, for fun), buying houses and popping out babes, but this smock making business takes first prize. Court reasoned that making a little baby smock thingy is only about $20 compared to the $80 baby dresses sold at boutiques. Makes sense. Even still, kudos to you, girlfriend!

I don't think I would have succeeded as a 50's, 60's or even 70's housewife. I believe in taking care of your man and all that jazz, but I have limits. My mom waited on my dad hand and foot. He certainly deserved it, but his inability to make a ham sandwich or bring dirty dishes to the sink was pretty darn humorous! Bless his heart.

So tell me: How domestic are you on a scale of 1 to 10? How have things changed as you've gotten older?

  3. I would say I am a 8 on the domestic scale. I cook and bake often, but I could be better about about cleaning up around my apartment!

  4. Probably a 5 or a 6...I am not dirty but I am a little messy. Make sense? Like I scrub and clean things for sure...but I definitely have clutter laying around!

  5. Trayn, I'm pretty sure you've got me beat on the cooking front. You've got to be at least a 4 :)

I don't either Elizabeth! I haven't had the explanation yet, and I just didn't feel like Googling it. haha. But isn't a smock what you wear at the doctor's office??

Wow, Nicole, 8 is pretty serious. Feel free to invite me over for dinner any time ;)

MHP, we are the opposite then. Luckily my sis is just like you, so we balance each other out!!

  6. Well... I guess you could say I am about an 8. I used to be higher but we just got a maid because I am tired of the domestic chores not getting finished around the house. So, I guess that bumped me down a notch. I will send some pics of the finished dresses your way when I am done :)

  7. Court! While I have to admit I am quite shocked that you have a maid, I'd still say you are a 10. At least. Smocking garners bonus points :) And yes, let's see those pics, girl! I have no idea what smocking is! It makes me think of a Snuggie...

  8. I'm probably about a 7 since I enjoy domestic things like baking and sewing. I know how to clean and am in the process of learning to cook BUT on principle I think once I'm married/babies/etc I'm making my husband learn. haha.

  9. considering my love for cooking and entertaining and utter disdain for anything else domestic i'm probably a 5. that whole waiting on a man hand and foot--not ever going to happen, no matter how hard my nigerian side of the family tries to make it so.

  10. and smock making? i'm not saying your friend should spend $80 on baby dresses because i'm sure they sell 'em at target for $25. but whatever floats her mommy boat...

  11. i am like a 3 or 4 max. i am just not good at that stuff. i CAN cook (well...actually no i can't) and clean and i actually own a sewing machine, i just don't do it. that is why you get married right? to have someone do all that for you?? :)

and i wore smock dresses until i was about 6. i am sure you have seen them-i think they are super southern. the little cotton dresses (or even jumpsuit things) with a panel in the front that has stitching on it (i use that term loosely, because it's called smocking, but that doesn't really explain anything) in prints like bunnies, building blocks, trains, whatever your sweet mama wants to put on there for you. does that help at all?!

  12. I would say I'm a -5. I'm a NYer. I can make a reservation or order in! I have frozen waffles? The only thing I am good at is keeping things clean. But I have to google how to do it. Lame.
