Personally, I think it's a big fat DON'T. Even if it's funny, it like, isn't. Check out what I mean below.
It's just so rehearsed. You know they spent more time practicing that routine than they did actually planning the wedding, right? Eh, it was cute, but LOL funny? Not to me. But, everyone should do whatever the hell makes them happy on their special day. Plus, I think we all know I'm just jealous of the bride's Jessica Biel guns.
What do you think: Is having a funny first dance a DO or a DON'T? Have you seen one at a wedding? Alright guys, it's Friday and you know what that means. Check back later to see super-fun pics from last night!

DON'T DON'T DON'T!! I think it's horrible.
ReplyDeleteI did a wedding last year where the bride and groom thought it'd be funny if they started a lovely slow dance, then the song screeched and started playing "99 Problems, But A Bitch Ain't One". everyone just sat there, wide-eyed...sooooo not funny.
I just think it's tacky. Save the silly stuff and the bump and grind for the last few hours when everyone's drunk and grandma has gone home.
Haha... Our wedding party came into the instrumental to RocBoyz (emphasis on instrumental). Everyone just frestyled their walk in. (They practiced for a few minutes before the doors opened.) We freestyled in, but we got serious with a nice slow dance. In fact, my grandpa really threw down and the entire wedding party had to keep up with him...lol!
ReplyDeleteThe wedding is a reflection of the couple. If a couple is silly then I guess it is fitting. But... 99 problems...VERY inappopriate.
Ok... why are they dancing like that with his wife on their wedding day? Ok ... they are just waaaay out there.
ReplyDeleteWe got married early in the morning...at 10:00am so we did a brunch for our reception and didn't have dancing. I didn't want a wedding (I wanted to elope) but Keith wanted the wedding so I agreed as long as it could be low-key...hence the brunch reception. Plus it was WAY cheaper and we got to take the extra money and spend 11 days in MAUI!!! :)
ReplyDeleteOkay...off topic...as for dancing I think it depends on the couple. Some people can make the funny dance work..you know?
I have never seen a "funny" wedding dance in person. I have seen couples who were skilled ballroom dancers strut their stuff to a choreographed routine, but it was usually a fox trot, about 2.5 min, and really lovely. If you know that YOU can pull it off and your guests will receive it well (99 Problems...yikes) then perhaps. Now I do like Latoya's idea - have folks free-style walk in when they are announced. That is more of a "what's up, y'all!!" moment.

I just remembered that I saw a couple shag to "Be Young, Be Foolish, but Be Happy" by the Tams. It was totally cute and fit the couple perfectly. (For your Brit readers...they did not consummate the marriage to the song, rather they danced a traditional dance for the Carolinas/Georgia region).
ReplyDeleteIf you don't want a serious first dance, opt for a more traditional dance to an oldie. Grandma wont fall out, but you can still express your couple style (yes, I just quoted Bride Wars).

I'm not against it, but I think it's overdone and gets less funny every time. The youtube video of the couple who broke into "Baby Got Back" was funny because they KILLED it. The wedding party that danced to "Thriller" was acceptable because that's the best dance ever. But now it's kind of like watching a pie-in-the-face gag. Neither original nor hilarious :P
ReplyDeletei'm gonna lean towards DON'T mostly because of what Kara said, its been overdone. Now as a bridesmaid in Latoya's wedding, it was a lot of fun having a freestyle walkin in--and being the friends that we are, i can't even imagine the stodgy tradional walk in. i say you find someway to really personalize the wedding, but not in the way of trendy antics.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the romance in doing something like that, save it for the stand up comic routine.
ReplyDeleteThe only funny dance that I have seen at a wedding was mine, but I thought that I was doing it like John Travolta.
Okay that was lame. But the youtube video of the couple who did the dance to Baby Got Back - CLASSIC.
ReplyDeleteI guess it really depends on the people. It would be much funnier if I knew the personality of the bride and groom. I find it funny, but overdone for sure... be a little creative.
ReplyDelete99 Problems?! Whoa, that is craaazy! I can't even imagine the look on everyone's face who was over the age of 35! Hell, I'm pretty sure I would have WTF?! look on my face as well. I'm glad I've never had to witness something like that.
ReplyDeleteMHP, that's so cute that your hub wanted the wedding. And brunch...what a GREAT idea! What kind of food did u have? I loove brunch food. Ok, now I'm hungry!
Haha, Shannon, you are too funny. You know I always appreciate movie quotes! I like that idea of doing a traditional dance that means something to you, like about where you're from, etc. And yes, I agree with Laytoya, too...having the wedding freestyle dance when they come out, is a FUN idea! It's not so calculated.
I agree, Kara, Aim and Nadette, it has been way overdone. At this point, if you're gonna do it, make sure you KICK ASS. And yes, the Thriller dance was pretty darn awesome.
Gary, John Travolta, eh? Smooth!
If you have the right family then why not? Don't do it for youtube, do it for the people at your wedding. It is probably a great way to get the party started if it is done right. Our wedding was a dancing croud, so they would have loved it. Maybe you can do the worm at your entrance Ellen!
ReplyDeleteI think that the funny dance is a good idea so long as you're both comfortable with both the slow song at the beginning AND the fun song that cuts in. if you're not comfortable dancing in front of people DON'T DO IT. and 99 problems...? WHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY??????????????? couldn't they have chosen something a little more..... conservative? i love the entrance idea. i'm actually getting married this august and we're using the star wars theme song as our entrance song, which is going to be fun =D i can't wait. we're dancing to Breathe You In by thousand foot krutch, and we're having the father daughter and mother son dance at the same time, cause the song is called parent's prayer by steven curtis chapman. it's going to be beautiful. <3
ReplyDeleteI really like your blog. You talk about such interesting and unusual things.
